I do believe that the testicles of a tanookie are actually considered "good luck" by the japanese. This is why alot of shops in towns have a tanuki statue standing outside their doors. You'll find numerous references to them in Anime (especially in Ranma 1/2).

As to the translation thing. My understanding is that whenever there's a miss-translation like that it's actually on purpose becaue they believe that the general public (the average joe who doesn't know squat about japan) wouldn't understand it and that's their attempt to "americanize" it. They usually do it with names and titles more than anything else...

I'm not saying it's right... just.. i think that's why it is...

I don't know if this would make a difference in this discussion or not but if you watch the Japanese Previews for Pom Poko it was called actually "Pom Pom - The Raccoon Wars"

And as far as the "Golden Seal" they added "Golden" so the amearicans watching wouldn't think they were talking about the slug-like creature since Most American wouldn't know what a Seal is or what its used for, btw the Seal was golden which is why its refered that way.

FYI the people that write the US script do watch the Japanese version and do their best to write an English script that will match the Japanese while making it so it would sound natual in English and not look like a HK kung-fu movie where they says 2 words and the lips keep moving for a mintue afterwards.

yea a tanuki. a teakettle racoon. little guys hide as inanamate objects. most of my books on their myths call them racoons of a sort. so when i hear tanuki i think Racoon.

It's also why in the game Animal Crossing when you buy items from Tom Nook they're shown as a leaf in your inventory until you place them in your room.

Ah ha ha ha ha ha the raccoon with the balls reminds me of that one Miyazaki movie you know the one with the raccoons that have the scrotums that can take the shape of just about anything. They can shape shift into people and there is some devlopement building encroaching on their land. That is because the movie "Pom Poko" that you are talking about is about tanuki. But mistranslations call them raccoon.
