I do believe they already did. Funny how bad of a translation studio they have. They ruin the whole film calling them raccoons and not tanuki. Just like in Spirited Away. They didn't know if the "golden seal" meant a stamp seal or a actual golden seal (as in the animal). Seriously that is stupidity. Because how hard is it to actually watch the film before translating it?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanuki
Notice the first sentence is: "Tanuki (狸 or タヌキ, Tanuki?) is often mistakenly translated as raccoon or badger, but tanuki are in fact two subspecies of raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides)."

I don't know if this would make a difference in this discussion or not but if you watch the Japanese Previews for Pom Poko it was called actually "Pom Pom - The Raccoon Wars"
And as far as the "Golden Seal" they added "Golden" so the amearicans watching wouldn't think they were talking about the slug-like creature since Most American wouldn't know what a Seal is or what its used for, btw the Seal was golden which is why its refered that way.
FYI the people that write the US script do watch the Japanese version and do their best to write an English script that will match the Japanese while making it so it would sound natual in English and not look like a HK kung-fu movie where they says 2 words and the lips keep moving for a mintue afterwards.
