Whew ? just finished page 31, and it was detailed. This is one of the reasons this took a little longer to finish. It's a good page, too! Only 5 pages to go!

Ha! Meant to do this earlier, but as I finished page 32, it was dinner time and tacos were calling me. Then, I forgot about posting this preview due to being in a taco-induced delirium. So, without further ado, here is the latest preview just before the weekend. Only 4 pages to go!
|
Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.
I feel your pain on the tacos. Theres local restaurant that does all you can eat tacos for $10 and i normally need to be dragged out i eat so much haha.
As for the updates, they're lookin great. I know ive said it before, but this is gona be sweet! |

Re: Page 33 preview ? grOw/cOmic#5, a GTS story.
1 Attachment(s)
I almost had this one done yesterday, but page 33 turned out to be more detailed than expected. This was mostly due to the use of the cloth textures, and needing to wrap them around curvy... uh, "curved"... objects. ;) Getting the right feel took a little extra work with the Warp and Liquify commands in Photoshop. Now it's on to the last 3 pages and issue 3 cover! We're getting closer!

Whew! Just in time for the weekend, I was able to finish page 34 of issue 2 ("Big Screen Premiere!"). It was another detailed page that took some extra effort. However, I was able to nail down a streamlined method for making the draped cloth (which can be seen in the last few previews) — a process that took nearly an hour per panel on the first page, now takes only about 15-20 minutes. And guess what?! Only 2 pages to go! Enjoy the preview!

Whew, I'm bushed. I spent an extra few hours today past my normal quitting time, finishing up page 35, the penultimate page to issue 2. Only 1 more page to go, and the cover to issue 3 (to be shown as a preview at the end of issue 2)! Unfortunately, I will be going away on a short trip on Thursday and Friday. I will get some work done tomorrow, but then I will continue on Monday. However, if all goes well, I hope to release issue 2, "Big Screen Premiere!", on or before Friday, July 27. Hang in there! We are very close!

I worked a few extra hours again tonight, so that I could finish page 36, which is the last page of issue 2 of grOw/cOmic#5! A few more things have to be done before the release of the issue. First of all, I have to draw and color the cover to issue 3, which appears as a preview at the end of issue 2. I already have it planned out, so it shouldn't take too long. Then, a full proofreading of the issue ? with the wonderful proofreading skills of my wife, Juliekat ? and then the inevitable corrections. After that, the final PDF will be put together, and the store needs to be configured ? both the eCommerce software, as well as my website. Unless there is a major delay that I need to announce, the next post here will be to announce the release of issue 2, "Big Screen Premiere!" of grOw/cOmic#5, "grOwing Appreciation"! This should be sometime between Wed., July 25 and Friday, July 27. Whoot!

Ah, another good page. I enjoyed working on page 47, and happy to be starting the next on our way to issue completion. This is now the 11th page of 19. Not counting the cover to issue 3 (seen as a sneak preview at the end of this upcoming issue), we are now about 58% through the issue, with the previous page completed (46) being the initial break past the halfway mark. To show the progress visually, I have added to this post my usual "progress map" laying out the work that has been finished, and that which still needs to be done.

I thought I would finish this page yesterday and get started on the next one, but page 48 proved to be a more detail and labor-intensive one than first anticipated. However, it was worth it. This is another great page. And it's a hot one! Just 7 more pages (and the cover to issue 4) to go! Hang in there, as we nearly pass the two-thirds mark!

I thought that I would have had this done by Monday evening, but, alas, it was not to be. There was just a little too much work to do, and it was getting late. So, finishing it up this morning with an extra hour or so's worth of work wrapped up page 49. With 13 out of 19 pages now done, we have surpassed that two-thirds point.

OK, I got so wrapped up in working on the issue, that once I finished page 50 (shown here) during the afternoon, I immediately went into working on page 51 without posting an update ? duh. (On top of that, I was also wrestling with a lot of "RL" work dropped in my lap ? so maybe that's what distracted me.) With this page, 14 of 19 pages for issue 3 have been completed, leaving only 5 to go!
Note: I wouldn't expect any more updates this week. Also, there may be not updates until late next week. This is due to a combination of "real life" work interfering as well as a big ol' nasty storm (a.k.a. Hurricane Sandy) heading my way. So, either I will be working, prepping for the storm (clean those gutters!), or sitting at home without an electricity. Hoping for the best in all of the above. :) Quote:

Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.
Hurricane Sandy came to town for a visit, and boy did she ever outstay her welcome. This was a 100-year event for this region, with huge swaths of devastation. Luckily, we are well with little damage in our very local community, but large areas were severely damaged only a few miles away. With Monday and Tuesday morning being Hurricane days, and Tuesday and Wednesday as clean-up and taking stock of the situation, and then Thursday and Friday recovering and working on "real life" work, I was unable to finish any new pages this week on grOw/cOmic#5, issue 3. However, I did work on page 51, and was able to make great progress on this detailed page to the point of about 75% completion. Hopefully, next week, we will begin to return to a normal schedule.
|
Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.
Don't sweat it, man. I know how it is with hurricanes, so take as much time as needed to get that stuff taken care of.
|
Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.
Holy crap it sucks to hear that you were affected by it. I saw what was going on via the news and it looked pretty nasty! Best wishes to you and everyone else over on the east coast who was hit!

Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.

It's been a long week, but I was finally able to complete page 51. The power gods were nice to me and let me have electricity for most of the week, having lost only about 8 hours on the day Hurricane Sandy hit. 90% of the 1.1 million of the customers for the Long Island Power Authority lost power (about 25% are still without power now 6 days later) ? so I count myself extremely lucky.
This page was another detailed one, with matching the drawings to the background taking some time, as well as the detail in each frame. Good page! Only 4 more pages (and the cover to the next issue ) to go! Quote:

Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.

This was a detailed page, and required lots of work ? especially with lighting. But page 52 is another one that I am proud of. Chip, chip, chip ? I am working steadily closer to the end. Only 3 pages to go!
On the Personal front: It was a good day few days to stay inside and work. The region is still recovering from Superstorm Sandy. On top of that, we just walloped by another nor'easter that dumped 4-6 inches of snow with 30-40mph winds and below freezing temperatures ? not fun for the 200,000+ households/businesses without power for 9 days straight, nor those with holes in their homes. Unless you have a fireplace, no electric means no heat. Gas lines are still long, too! And not just for cars, as people wait in hours-long lines for gas for their generators to keep warm. How bad is the shortage? Check out this site: gasbuddy.com/sandy. Make sure the "All stations" is chosen from the po-up menu in the upper-left. Red is a station with no gas, green with. (Or, just look at the attached screenshot) You will see its about a 5:1 ratio. |
Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.

Page 53 proved to be quite the detailed page, with multiple panels, plenty of faces and characters, lighting effects, and lots of overlapping action. Though I had originally hoped to have finished it yesterday, I was finally able to complete it early this afternoon. Only 2 more pages (and the cover to issue 4) to go! Hang in there!

Surprise! I was making great progress on the next page, so I decided to continue working late and complete page 54, just one day after the last. It was definitely not an easy page, so the quick turn around was the result of a lot of extra work. Sorry for a slightly more vague cropping of the preview this time, but we are getting to the end of the issue, and I don't want to reveal too much. Speaking of end of issue, there is only 1 page and 1 cover to go! The cover, of course, is for issue 4, which appears as a sneak preview at the end of issue 3. We are almost there!

Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.
Hey BA!
First, wanted to wish you and yours well as you weathered hurricane Sandy and the snowstorm that followed. Plus you are still pushing on the next book! That gas map image (although not the most titillating image attachment ever) really shows the scope of the gas shortages. Thanks for sharing. Anyway - had not seen you over at the BEA recently and noticed that you were actively posting here and wanted to send some encouragement. Quick questions about the work: 1) Are you drawing your hardline on paper and scanning now or digitally with a tablet or such? 2) What size (in pixels) are your pages when done or the dpi you would print at? Oh, did want to add that thumbnail of the way too small shirt straining across the gal's chest made my wife say "ouch!" out loud. See, your work is eliciting a response! Say "Hi" to 'JC' for us! ;) |

Page 55, the final page to issue 3 of grOw/cOmic#5, has been completed! I have also drawn and started to ink the cover of issue 4 (which appears at the end of the issue). In addition, I have already begun the proofreading and correcting over this past weekend. We're almost there! I hope to have a release very soon! For now, enjoy the preview, which (as usual) I had to make somewhat vague so as to not give away the ending of the chapter.

I've been to the BEA, more a lurker from time to time. So bust with the latest "grOw" endeavors that I don't have as much time to forum hop as I used to — unfortunately. :( As for the work questions: 1) I still draw the pages with good ol' pencil and paper and then scan them in. For the past 2 years, I've been drawing them about 140% larger than final. This allows for better accuracy, especially on the smaller panels. (It's also easier on me.) Recently, I've even started to experiment with a new method — not drawing the page as whole, but drawing separate panels and compositing them after scanning them in. This way, I can draw face large, and shrink it if it needs to be small. At small sizes, the width of a pencil point shift in a line can cause a face to look "wrong." The good lines are inked digitally with my Wacom Intuos3 in Adobe Illustrator (as well as the flat coloring). Shading, composites with backgrounds, effects, etc. are then done in Photoshop. 2) The current cOmic pages are 2700 x 3525 pixels (or 9" x 11.75" at 300 ppi). I used to work at 200dpi, but converted over on grOw#4. . |

The final pencil drawn page for issue 4 of grOw/cOmic#5, "grOwing Appreciation" has been completed! It was a long haul, but I finally finished the last page of the issue ? page 75. If you do the math from last issue, you will realize that this will make this issue 20 pages long ? 2 more than the standard! There is a lot going on in this issue, and another 2 pages were needed to tell the story right! It's going to be a good one, so hang in there! Digital inking and painting are about to begin, as all pages have been scanned and reworked where needed. As usual, as the coloring of each page is completed, I will be showing a preview for that page here. Thanks for being patient ? holidays and "real life" work have been slowing me down a bit for the past month or so.

Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.

I know it's been a while since my last update, but know that progress is still being made on issue 4, "A Huge Smash!". "Real life" graphic design work has really come down on me since early December. This is quite common for this time of year ? the ending of one year, and the beginning of another, a time for clients to end or begin new projects. I expect this crunch to start to ease somewhat soon, and eventually return to normal.
But during this time, work on the next issue has continued, including the completion of pages 56 and 57. Not only that, but the rendering of backgrounds continues. I've mentioned this before, but it is a lot of work, and takes time ? a few backgrounds have even taken 10-12 hours to render. For now, enjoy the preview to page 57, and hopefully, I will have at least 1 or 2 previews next week. |

I was hoping to have 2 previews to show this week, and with the completion of page 59 this afternoon, I made my goal! "RL" work is still slowing me on the "grOw" front, taking up time, but I am persevering through the workload. |
Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.

Chip, chip, chip ? progress continues on issue #4 with the completion of page 60. Integration between drawings and the rendered backgrounds is getting a little trickier now, as the available space is getting... ahem... tighter, and alignment between the two is important. But it is all coming along quite well, so far! With this preview, we've hit the 25% mark of the issue. Hang in there! It's going to be a good one!
|
Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.

Whoot! Another day, another page. "RL" work gave me a short reprieve, so I was able to make some great progress today by starting and completing page 61. I know the work load will come back in the later part of the week, so I am not sure if I will be able to pump out another page this quickly before Friday. We shall see. But this page really came out nice. The use of Poser was essential to get the right dramatic angles. To visualize the figures and their interaction with the background with these camera angles would have been impossible any other way.
|
Re: next grOw/cOmic to be a GTS story.
Ive said it before and ill say it again, lookin good! Im sure issue 4 is going to be just as awesome as the others!
