The Change - Full Release

1 Attachment(s)
My story, "The Change" is released!

Unfortunately, due to the content, Kindle has already rejected it and Barnes & Nobles will probably reject it as well... so I've published it on Smashwords.

Please visit here: http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/64414

And please respect the purchase and do not distribute your copy. I've had to pay for the illustrations out of pocket and it wasn't cheap. If I'm able to make my money back, I'll probably do a sequel that's even longer.

This is a very erotic and explicit story so be careful when purchasing!

Thanks so much!

Agreed, a really good read. But ( and I hope I'm not being disrespectful)
do you think you could add a PDF version to the list? ^_^

LycanDope 06-04-2011 06:42 PM

Re: The Change - Full Release

I'm a little afraid to because it could be distributed so easily but I guess I'm probably screwed either way with the other formats available, yeah? It would make Jesus cry if ... he found it on a torrent. Inevitable?

Did you read the whole thing? Feel free to leave a comment on the one website if you want. Or a rating? I don't know how it works since I just signed up for it a few hours ago...

Tyger 06-04-2011 07:02 PM

Re: The Change - Full Release

ahh yeah, that's understandable. I've used smashwords once before, my friend Graveyard Greg wrote another story on there. not sure how it works completely myself. ^^;;;

Re: The Change - Full Release

Y'know, I've always wondered... what stops us (any of us) from putting up a project tracker, where we can measure how much a project costs; how many sales need to be made to offset the cost; and where the extra profit starts rolling in (icing on the cake, as it were)? I mean, does that really need to be kept to PMs on a private forum?

More curious than anything. Beyond that, I wonder if there's any way I can "gift" a SmashWords purchase, not having used it before... ;)

Re: The Change - Full Release

I purchased it but didn't realize there was no easy way to download it. I have a Kindle but do not want to load it on there.

Do I have to go to Smashwords every time I want to read it? I guess I could cut and paste the whole thing. Kind of a pain.

Having said that, great story, very much enjoyed it. The illustrations are good too.

Can you put it on Lulu.com.....? please....?

If I pay for a book, I want it in paper and DRM free. Yeah I am crazy, so what?

You can download a kindle app for your computer and open the file you download from the site that way.

Edit: it shouldn't sync to your other devices, but if it does you can delete the book from the kindle app and that shouldn't delete the actual file.

Re: The Change - Full Release

@Locofuria - Lulu takes 50% of the purchase price, this place only takes 15%. Why would you rather have it on Lulu? Do they do something different?

@LostHopeOfDusk - I wish I was able to print it. That'd be pretty cool. Unfortunately...

@Northwind - I'm still thinking about PDF format but like rettiroen has mentioned, you can download the file and open via a viewer like the Kindle App or otherwise.

Just got it, must say that epub is quite a weird file if you don't have a reader (which are the most) but surfed and found this for those who use firefox, works great:

https://addons.mozilla.org/es-ES/fir...on/epubreader/

Though I'd encourage the use of the PDF, it's your choice. Kudos for finishing your project! :D

Re: The Change - Full Release

I really want to buy this but there is no real viable format for me to use, i don't want to have to install various programs just to access one file i am going to use with them.

I'll just wait for the pdf or if there isn't one well i guess never.

EDIT: I bought it anyway but a pdf is still preferable :)

Re: The Change - Full Release

Just to try and address some points regarding the publishing medium:

DRM - Smashwords publications are DRM-free (http://www.smashwords.com/about).

PDF option - The epub open standard is readily convertible to PDF with very little effort.
Web-based (no-cost) service: http://www.convertfiles.com/

I've personally migrated the format from epub to PDF using a local piece of software (before finding the online service) using okular on Ubuntu with all the effort of saving as a PDF. No prompts for passwords, no unwanted network activity/watermarks, easily transfers between systems/formats with no issues. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1491373

Persons choosing to use a platform such as Ubuntu should already have the ability to view epub documents with no additional software beyond the default out-of-box Document Viewer.

Re: The Change - Full Release

I been in this community since the days if the transformation graphics archive and when werekat had the best site going... Anyway I always wondered why don't we pool our money and commission some quality works rather than hope. Hope is Not a strategy, we can commission some proper media professional studio grade but just need someone trustworthy and willing to coordinate and you seem like you can do this from following this project. To keep it fair we could just stream the final product on a pay per view site till we recouped our expenses then any profits put to the next work...

LycanDope 06-06-2011 10:24 AM

Re: The Change - Full Release

I'm still waiting for B&N's decision on this. It'd be nice if they allowed it but I'm skeptical after Amazon said no.

As far as trying to do some outside project management there's really no way to do it that would prevent eventual distribution of the file. If you're thinking of a kickstarter style method where the project is not released until a certain amount of money is paid-in then that might work. It'd basically be a mass commission. Then you have to make sure the author and illustrator are decent. I guess it'd be possible but how much of a desire is there for projects like this? Probably something to discuss in another thread.

For the people that got the book from smashwords, would y'all mind rating the story at their site?

Thanks!

Thanks ivan! (or ivan11422?) - don't be afraid to leave a rating or review at the smashwords site... [shameless plug] I keep want to ask people what their favorite scene or character is but I guess that'd be spoilers? Sad day.

@dorintf - it's a fast read and I hope you enjoy it!

Your graphic book is excellent and the story is amazing

Re: The Change - Full Release

Barnes & Noble accepted it! I'm shocked and amazed and happy. Of course, it's probably only until someone not into werewolves & sex notices and flags it but, hey! Still really cool.

I think this is the url: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The.../2940012966063

Again, feel free to leave a rating on either smashwords or the B&N site if you get it from there. That will help to get it out there more.

@Locofuria - Thanks :) I'm glad I can give back to the community... even if I'm charging for it...

Re: The Change - Full Release

Just bought this and it's absolutely amazing! the story is imaginative and well written and the illustrator did a fantastic job of bringing the story to life, well worth the money and if theres ever a sequel of the same calibre i would happily part with more money for it, my only feedback would be maybe slightly more process in the illustrations but thats just personal preference. Great job man

LycanDope 06-13-2011 11:57 AM

Re: The Change - Full Release

@Daichi Azure - Thank you for the purchase and the review! I appreciate each review I get even if it's not all gushing and perfect :)

@jimi20 - I'm glad it was worth the wait for you! I'm already tossing around one or two ideas for a possible sequel and I know if I do one I'm definitely adding in Victoria from 'Skin' and maybe some other weres as well. I just don't want to saturate it or have the story drag on or anything. It'll be problematic working out how to afford the illustrations again because a sequel will probably be longer so 30 illustrations may not be enough. So, it'll take some thought.

Thanks again for the people that left reviews on Smashwords or B&N! I really, really appreciate it! I even had one random person leave a review for 'Skin' on Smashwords and I thought that was cool. I don't think the person was from here or FA or DA so I'm glad 'The Change' and 'Skin' are being stumbled on and enjoyed by other people. 'The Change' got the same - a person not from this community (I think) left a review on it on B&N. That's a cool thing to see for me :)

I've bought it and really liked it, left a full review at Smashwords. As for a sequal I'd really like to see a third female were-wolf added to the pack and Were-Lions.

We dont pool our money because:

A) Everyone has diferent tastes

B) Some people does not have enough money

C) Nowadays free stuff is cheesy easy to find.

D) Some people has money but other more urgent matters to waste it, for example I need to

1) Fix a VCR or get another one

2) Get a new a toilet

3) Fix a bike

4) Buy a new mattress

5) Get a new TV

6)Buy a new tub for my bathroom

7)Install the new tub

Re: The Change - Full Release

Good news! I've almost made my money back on the illustrations so I'm going to start kicking around ideas and see what I can come up with for a sequel. I have a couple vague scenes in mind and I know I'm going to put Victoria in it but that's about all at the moment.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to pass them on. I won't promise to put your suggestion in place but I definitely don't mind looking them over.

Also, please take the time to rate the book if you've purchased it. It helps with things :)

LycanDope 06-23-2011 09:54 AM

Re: The Change - Full Release

I'm going to offer a $1 off coupon for the sequel to "The Change" (when it's done - which will be a little while) to anyone that leaves a review on "The Change" at Smashwords or Barnes and Noble.

I'm not bribing you for a 5 star review. Review and rate it as you will and you'll still get a coupon - even if you put it as 1 star. Just send me a message with the username and review you used as well as an email address. When I finally do put out the next book, I'll email you the information for the coupon. It'll be valid on Smashwords only since it allows for coupons.

If you already did a review/rating - let me know that as well in a message.

Re: The Change - Full Release

I've just finished reading it myself. Kudos to the illustrator for bringing the story to life in pictures, especially for the multi-page gradual transformation in the middle of the story, and the various depictions of the wolves in mid- or partial transformation.

As for the story itself - I thought it was quite well-written, but did suffer in a few places from "show don't tell" - telling the reader that someone said something, instead of showing it by letting the characters speak for themselves. However, I found that this rarely extends to important conversations used to move the plot along, and aside from that, the dialogue is very good and natural.

I enjoy TFs triggered by sex, or vice-versa, so this story pushed all of my "fetish buttons" while still appealing to my sensibilities as a reader of fantasy fiction. Once again, I'm finding your story universe quite captivating; I assume that your next story will bring the wolves together with Victoria from your other story? Even if you choose to focus on new characters instead, I'm still looking forward to your next story!

LycanDope 08-23-2011 06:56 PM

Re: The Change - Full Release

Thank you! The illustrator is awesome and we worked really hard to find the best positions and best scenes to illustrate. It actually took longer to pick out scenes and work through sketches than it did to write the story. I don't know whether that's good or not... :)

Do you think Unchained did better on the dialogue? This was the first thing I've written and although I spent more time polishing it, I feel like I did a little better with Unchained for some things. Dialogue and descriptions and story - I mean, there wasn't even any sex and The Change drowned in sex. I was honestly surprised I could write 30,000 words without a sex scene :p

I think it's safe to say (without spoiling things) that the next story will merge the characters a bit. Unless I do a short unrelated story then the next thing to do will be the sequel to The Change and Unchained set that up a bit. But there will also be new characters introduced as well. Ideas are slowly forming. I should go on more walks, that seems to bring things out.

I'm really glad you're enjoying the world building! It's fun :) Did you read Skin->Unchained->The Change? If so then that probably worked out well since that's basically their chronological order.

Yes, I think you did better with dialogue in Unchained. This might be related to the perspective you used, though - The Change is exclusively first person, which forces you to write descriptively from one perspective, rather than the third person perspective of Unchained. Or it could be down to you getting better at writing as you go along... :)

And yeah, I did read it in the order Skin > Unchained > The Change... mainly because I don't like putting down money on something unless I know that the author/artist is good. I've been burned too many times by paid-for material that was low-quality. Thankfully that's not the case here!

FYI - going to be starting on #2 in this series in the next two weeks :) Will be traveling on work for a few days so that'll give me the perfect time to just sit and write since I'll be stuck in a hotel anyway. Also might do a couple non-related very short stories in the meantime :)

Next story in the series will be titled 'Pack'.
