beaddventure

Seems it went private/subscription? New ownership or something?

A shame on that, I guess.

Re: beaddventure

Didn't this happen last year as well? Is it a configuration problem again or did they really put it behind a paywall? If the latter then RIP bearchive.

PyroWildcat 09-27-2017 10:11 AM

Re: beaddventure

I seriously doubt they'd pull something like that, especially with zero prior notice. It's probably just a temporary issue; after all, this same problem has come up before.

Kyril 09-27-2017 06:18 PM

Re: beaddventure

Looks to be another config problem from a server change, based on this forum thread.

Just so you know, there is a "Free Account" option in the Membership Type drop-down.

That's still paying for it with my information and thus not going to do it. Especially after an acquisition like this - they bought the BEA knowing this was an open feature so getting cute and hiding it behind accounts means they don't want our continued patronage.

Other groups have done this through the decades and their cyoa features have died from it. Thus I can naturally be disappointed if the new ownership doesn't understand this. Which is unfortunate.

PyroWildcat 09-29-2017 02:57 PM

Re: beaddventure

Let's not argue over something that's not even an issue; just wait for them to fix this and you won't worry about paying or signing up for anything.

This is a temporary screw-up brought about by switching servers, not a permanent change. This talk of 'new ownership' was nothing but unfounded conjecture on the part of MadmanDarkHeretic.

Cilansis 09-29-2017 03:31 PM

Re: beaddventure

They've even mentioned on the BEA forums that they are still having issues with the migration keeping the old portions of the site freely available without login. It'll get fixed in time, just have to have patience I suppose. If it doesn't get fixed in a timely manner, then people will just go elsewhere.

Pyro and Cil, thank you. Yeah, I'd been following it over there as well and used the adjective of 'infernal' in reference to just the perniciousness of such a silly configuration error.

Re: beaddventure

Hmmmm. So it's still down? This and the fact that you can click on "full view" at cyoc.net, makes cyoc a better choice for the process interactive I want to start. :/

Re: beaddventure

Update after checking the forums on Bearchive.

So far management is saying a login is needed by for the Addventure, but there is a free option.

Also are there any other places similar to the Addventure besides CYOA? Since a membership wall might see Addventure posts drop.

has anyone gotten word from them that they are fixing it?

Re: beaddventure

Writing.com has a slightly better membership wall (gotta join to post, can view without if it's not high-traffic time, and no access to outline). Anime Addventure died recently.

Looking a mite grim.

As per Brick's report there isn't a fix, this is currently working as designed.

Pretty sure the BEA has been owned by the Breast Expansion Story Club/Botcomics people for a loooooong time already (and they've had an unofficial policy of "benign neglect" toward the Addventure for pretty much the entire time).

I was a little surprised to see some people on the forum saying that they hadn't previously realized the Addventure was even part of another site, much less an ostensible paysite. But I guess I can see that, if someone happened upon it from a Google search. (Me, I occasionally visited the BEArchive even before the Addventure existed -- gosh, I'm old.)

RIP addventure. Even if you aren't technically dead, having a login screen to even view it will result in a sharp drop of contribution and essentially walls off new people from discovering it.

CYOC is a decent alternative but it's clearly more focused on transformation.

Wait a minute, you need a login to view, rather than just to contribute?
Are they allergic to money?

EDIT
The more I read, the more pissed off I get.
Tuck the "add a chapter" response behind HTACCESS.
Swap out the standard 403 page for a custom.
"The Unending BE Addventure is a product of BotComics and the BEArchive. Want to contribute? Sign up for a free account here! We'll even consider prolific contributors for a paid account totally free of charge."
Problem fucking solved.

To be fair, they weren't making any money out of the addventure anyhow. It did not have any ads. This is a way to try to get paid subscriptions out of it or to discover that the addventure is actually linked to that site. It is just done terribly poorly without any thought on how it would effect the community the site requires to stay healthy.

brickware 10-02-2017 08:28 AM

Re: beaddventure

So I did eventually get a confirmation email eventually in my Inbox. However I say eventually as it took about 3-4 hours to come from when I tried signing up.

Re: beaddventure

What a shame. In the past I've enjoyed browsing through some entries and even contributing myself with a few entries. Without that "anyone can add an entry and without logins" part of it, it probably is going to die off.

Been trying to sign up as well but also not getting the confirmation email in my inbox or spam folder. Once I do get that sorted, I'm probably going to back up some of the entries I wrote so they're not lost forever (Or indeed, become harder to access.)

Can't say I'm disappointed when most of the chapters submitted on a daily basis have not interested me in the slightest, or go off into weird territories that are beyond kinkshaming. And that's not mentioning the legit work writers put in to tell their stories.

Some definitions and answers to void any speculation:

1. I am the Marketing Manager of BotComics, Inc. We are also owners of BEArchive and I work here since 2011. I am not some newbie playing around with your loved 20 year old website. BUT I have to recognize, I am not as familiar with BEArchive as I am with the comics websites, so all your feedback is valuable to me. If we need to reverse some decision because we see that's the best for the majority of the community, we will do it.

2. When we added the registration and login requirement to access Addventure it wasn't done because of the traffic or the publicity. When we designed the login/registration process it was for bearchive.com. What happened with Addventure was completely accidental. We never expected to disturb the community.

3. We are a small group of people managing a significant number of projects and despite reading and accepting some of your recommendations we can't just implement all the solutions immediately. We have limited human and economical resources and we can't do everything at the same time.

4. It will take some time for us to fix some problems and behaviors of the website. Maybe a week or two. In the meantime, I kindly ask for your patience and understanding.

5. We are evaluating the solution proposed by Adama "Open to view, register to post".

I'll keep you posted with a new post on this thread.

Have a great day.

Yeah, that makes me confused about where his reply on page 3 came from. Is this saving face or was it all really just a misunderstanding?

Either way, glad we dodged a bullet here. Here's hoping that the login thing gets fixed soon, but I might as well put up the episodes I had been sitting on while waiting for this to be undone.

I had written a bunch of episodes from the day the Addventure got messed up, and I had decided to hold them until things got resolved; unfortunately, there's no shrinking in any of them. I don't dislike SW, but I don't go out of my way to write it either.

There is a budding storyline in Witch's Mansion where Samus Aran gets transformed into a fairy, but it's been awhile since I've written for it.

Re: beaddventure

Seems like it's really shrunk in population, but going to the link earlier in the thread does get in without any login check that I've seen? Maybe it was wandering the bea earlier looking at it.

Re: beaddventure

If you register and keep yourself logged in your browser, the link will take you there without the log in. Not tried posting any new entries yet, but as long as you don't delete the cookies from your browser or log out, the link will take you there every time.

I suspect things will pick up a bit more once someone revives a Samus Aran path....

Cilansis 10-06-2017 04:27 PM

Re: beaddventure

The cookie expires after about a day or two I've noticed. I check for new entries daily and it has me log back in every other day. It also redirects me to a broken link afterwards.

Re: beaddventure

They're still dragging their feet on the Addventure, and have exiled all complaints to a subreddit where they can safely be ignored.

Someone over there needs to re-evaluate the extent to which the "birthing pains" of the "new BEA" are worth what they're gaining, because locking the Addventure up will likely kill both child and mother.
