I really hope Lucas is still in the roster. He is a VERY unknown character though Nintendo-lore wise, so I'm doubting he'll make a comeback.

I main Lucas, Pikachu, and King Dee Dee Dee. I'm guessing KDDD is safe, and Pikachu clearly is, so that just leaves Lucas in doubt. I figure Ness is safe, but Ness is no Lucas.

Last month Nintendo had a Mother event in Japan. They had billboards and television commercials to let people know they could buy Mother 2 on the WiiU now. They are also finally rereleasing Earthbound in the states.

I think Lucas is safe.

I'll see your Lv. 1 recursive kirby transformation and raise you a Lv. 4:
http://brawlinthefamily.keenspot.com...by-transforms/

I'm totally hyped for it. I'm going to constantly annoy my friends by calling him JUMP-'N-SHOOT MAN. I'm DEFINITELY trying him out the moment I get the game.

I'm not too concerned about my mains. Not because I don't think they'll change, but because I'm sure they'll change a bit. I mean, back in Melee, I mained Sheik, Samus, and was starting to pick up Jiggles (who happens to get her own amazing change in 6th gen Pokemon, btw, but that's a different topic). When Brawl came around, that changed to (in order) Lucas, Pikachu, Pokemon Trainer, Ganondorf, Kirby, Mr.G&W. Practically all my friends (except this obnoxiously good Pit player) find them all insufferable. I got a really good understanding of the internal mechanics of the series and now I have an idea of how to find easily exploitable tricks once I get my hands on the release, but I highly doubt my mains will be the same. Villager's looking pretty viable as a pseudo-G&W, seeing how he casually plucked one of Samus's charge shots out of mid-air.

I got really good good understanding of the internal mechanics of the series during Brawl. Much better than I got in Melee. I can only imagine what Smash Bros. 3DS (I ain't buying a Wii U unless extensive versus match configuration is in) would do for me.

EDIT: Oh, and I'll just leave this here:

EDITEDIT: Scratch that, its already on the main site.

The same way I felt about Mr. Game & Watch and R.O.B.: surprised.
That's it. It was an unexpected surprise. The character video helped to convince me that, at the very least, she'll be an entertaining addition to the Smash cast.
Also, some of the hilariously awesome fan-art helps.

Speaking of unexpected additions, isn't Namco Bandai helping out with this game?

I initially had my doubts as far as WFT goes, but as far as I'm concerned, it's a new "realistically proportioned" female Brawl character, so there's inevitably going to be BE of her eventually. I'm cool with this.

I know that feeling.

http://bluesteven.files.wordpress.co...romite_rob.jpg

"Hello. I am R.O.B., the Robotic Operating Buddy. I am the single most useless peripheral Nintendo ever made. I only worked with two NES games; one which was never released, and another in which I could be replaced by a second controller. If you had to choose between erasing me or the Power Glove from existence, you might have to think long and hard about it, but you would choose me. And I got into Smash Bros. Brawl and Krystal didn't."

Seriously, though, I don't hate R.O.B, I just thought Krystal should have been in Brawl too. I hope Nintendo doesn't let me down this time.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way.

She was a slapped together character that was originally not part of the StarFox universe (Starfox Adventures was going to be a new IP and she was going to be the main character, but instead they slapped Starfox on the title and pushed her over to a supporting role).

Let's face it...people like her because she is a fox with tits. Not much else going for her.

Soccermom 06-18-2013 10:47 AM

Re: New Smash Bros!

I have no affiliation towards Krystal at all, but if they're looking to keep the same number of SF characters in the new one, I certainly wouldn't mind them dropping Wolf. I hate that character so much. Probably my least favorite Brawl character next to Wario, Jigglypuff and Olimar.

Exactly. Krystal could've been not only an interesting new character, but an interesting new heroine. But then the Starfox license got added and all that potential went to waste. She could've been a badass heroine along the lines of Samus Aran or Lara Croft, but she got shoved aside so a MAN could take up the role and made into yet another damsel in distress, because Nintendo games don't have enough of those, apparently. People criticize Other M for the way Samus was portrayed, but at least she still got to be the heroine. Smash Bros. is Krystal's chance to finally be the heroine she was always meant to be.

But Krystal is a terrible character from a franchise that didn't need three character back in 2008, and doesn't need three characters now. Lots of people like her because she offers a staff play style, but just about any character can have a unique move set with a little time. Having a unique play style does not help a character's chances one bit. She's also well-hated by Japanese audiences.

Falco remains the most prominent secondary Star Fox character, and has now appeared in two Smash games making his removal unlikely. Wolf, although is likely to be one the few characters is the "Danger Zone" with Ike, Toon Link, and Lucario, he still offers something more substantial and relevant to a franchise than female representation. That being villainous or adversarial representation.

It really isn't a "misconception." I suppose for a tournament setting, you have to neuter all of the fun of the game in order to even it out as much as possible, but I would think the ideal way to run tournaments to gauge skill would be:

Best 3 out of 5
Medium drop of items, all on(unless some are specifically agreed on to be excluded)
Random stages
And most importantly, randomized character. I want to see these "pro" players do as well playing Ganondorf as they do with Metaknight or Marth.

That's something I can get behind. The game was designed to have a level of randomness. If your too fucking scared to lose to a 6 yr old cause of randomness. Your probably not that good at the game anyway.

Well, try not to be going down the opposite path, guys. You may not find their method of play fun, but they tend not to find yours fun either. No one person's way of playing is the right one.

vincent_richter 07-05-2013 08:38 AM

Re: New Smash Bros!

It makes sense, though. For tourneys, it's usually a good idea to limit random outcomes as much as possible. However, I'd still like to see "no favorites / enforced character randoms" to both increase originality and encourage tactical variations. I don't see any variation where "crouch and spam grenades" is a valid tournament strategy. Try that shit with Ike and just see what happens. :p

64 : Fox is a High tier ( Best 2 characters are Kirby / Pikachu )
Melee : Fox is a Top tier ( has bad match-ups vs Marth/Puff ( Who is actually top tier )/Falco/Sheik) Fox also can do bad vs mid tiers like Pikachu and C.Falcon, Mario, Doc, etc.

The online for brawl was designed poorly. A lot of lag and just doesn't live up to other games online play.

We use several stages which include:

Final Destination
Smashville
Lylat
Battlefield
Yoshi Island
Frigate
Halbred
Castle Seige
Delphino

That is just off the top fo my head.

TBH FD is a stage that is "neutral" in people's eyes ( tbh though battlefield imo is the best stage ).

This is a matter of opinion but I will explain our rules simply as

2 out of 3
no items
some stages are banned and some are legal.
You can pick character

Those are the rules we play by. This is because

- 3/5 takes too long. Average time for a match is 5-6 mins for any version of smash.

- Items are , based on the frame data and a lot of factors, "random". This basically means that it does not test the skill of the player but is considered just a chance. There are HOWEVER Item legal events as side events that people enter. Those are fun. But that is our logic. We want the PLAYER to win not the item or stage or whatever is not the two players.

- Forcing players to pick random is a side event we also do. In major events ( Apex 2012 and Apex 2013 for brawl had 1000+ people ) it would not be fair to force others to roll the dice (which is something i mention just above here)

Go to my thread where I list links to my events and youtube matches. You will find that we are a great community and we actually have a great time.

Apex 2013 winners were

64 - Japanese player that uses Kirby
Melee - Swedish player that uses Peach
Brawl - NJ player that uses ZERO Suit Samus.

:) Thanks for listening.

IMO, it's beyond fair. I always burst out laughing when I see a veteran take down a novice, using (non-toon) Link and Olimar, respectively. Tiers can be broken if the player is skilled enough.

nightfieldzero 07-05-2013 04:14 PM

Re: New Smash Bros!

I did not say it wasn't. I feel any time you force someone do to something is unfair.

Like I said there are players that use every character. But , face facts, some characters are not that great. It takes a lot more skill and some people do not have it.

Brawl, for example, in Japan Peach is placing top 3 which is unheard of.

BTW - Olimar is also a great character.

vincent_richter 07-05-2013 04:40 PM

Re: New Smash Bros!

Okay, fair enough; I just feel forced randoms serve to level the playing field.
There is, however, another way to balance the results: add a Special bonus to the in-game score.
It can be positive or negative, depending on variety and complexity of attacks.
That way, some backstab-spamming jackass can actually place behind someone who took the time to learn their character.

nightfieldzero 07-05-2013 05:44 PM

Well, tiers assume by default that the players are of equal skill, so that's not really relevant. Absolutely true, though.

Skill > character choice by far.

Also, unrelated, but the game has been announced for three and a half weeks and I've yet to see anything processy of the Wii Fit Trainer. Either I haven't looked hard enough or I am disappoint.

(Assuming I know what backstab-spamming is.) If someone does the same attack over and over, and the opponent still can't stop them despite the predictability, doesn't that point to the opponent's lack of skill? Why reward that?

Typically, I use Mario/Dr.Mario and Link/Young Link.

I am a firm believer that tiers are not the end all be all and any character is more than capable of winning. Period. What matters is the person playing.

I only go to the Jigglypuff when I want to be REALLY annoying (It's fun doing a 4 player FFA and making the 3 others have to gang up on you because you keep using sleep whenever they all get clustered together, killing all 3 multiple times XD). And when I talk balance, assume I'm talking about Melee. Brawl just didn't cut it for me competitively....random tripping...SERIOUSLY?!

And I know that Metaknight was considered too OP and has been banned from the big name tourneys, heh.

Well, alex has a valid point about staling, but I did say the "bonus" could be negative for appropriately cheap players, thus negating the advantage of alternating between two overpowered attacks. Play the field or pay the price, I say. ;)

Forgot to mention, I also use Samus.

And you bet your ass I'll be using the super extended grapple hook against you :) (drawback: You have to manually press the button a second time to succeed in the actual grapple, otherwise it goes through the person)

Other drawback: can't grab aerial people.
