I like them fairly rapid (as in a matter of seconds) and accompanied by some degree of sexual pleasure. It's best if the tail emerges bare, then after a few inches the hair starts growing at the tip. Otherwise it might look too much like poop.

Only good one I've actually seen, not just imagined, is in UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie, episode 3. Girls get zapped with catgirl rays and their tails just snake right out. No pain, no mess.
