I used to read El Goonish Shive as well. The anthromorphic squirrel was fun too... it's just not even about it anymore. It's about exceedingly convoluted interdimensional plots. There has to be a 'reaaaason' and a 'purpose' behind things happening. Sure, I see why he went that way, but yeah, the story isn't good enough to stand on its own without the comedy or the amusing tfs, so naturally the audience dwindled when its update rate vanished.
