I'm really not meaning to be harsh on this, as it is a good story, but you can't expect anyone to come out with sweeping statements like "all female Anthros go into heat for two days" when only two days has passed since the phenomenon. That's not long enough to run a scientific study to determine whether this applies to all subspecies or just some, which is one of the first things that should be determined.
But as you say, the story is character-driven, and bogging it down with science wouldn't be good for it. I'm just very logical and analytical when it comes to continuity - it's the Star Trek nerd in me
