(more random ideas.)

Maybe the rival was a higher ranking student and better martial artist than Subi, however, Subi always recieved more attention from the master because of her potential.

The master could have sent the rival to watch over her and report.

(Kind of like that movie "Beverly Hills Ninja" with Chris Farley and that guy that played as Liu Kang in "Mortal Combat".)

The rival was a little annoyed and reluctant of the master's request, but still remained loyal.

The rival, perhaps, was always annoyed by Subi's clumsiness and ability to somehow miraculously succeed in the masters tests. (Not to mention, a little jealous of Subi's full figure.)

I'm imagining the rival's personality to be something like Mihoshi's partner, Kyone, in the Tenchi series.
A bit of a workaholic, a little bit of a bitch, but not a bad person.

Perhaps the rival is supposed to bring Subi back if Subi can't handle herself in her new home.

The rival wants to get this ordeal over with as soon as possible. In order for that to happen, Subi must go back home. The rival may seem to enjoy the city life, like Subi. So the rival "occasionally" tries to persuade, the way a martial artist would, for Subi to go back home.
Subi's gang might get in the way every once in a while.

Maybe Subi admires this rival a bit and has always wanted to win a challenge, without having a miraculous clumsy victory.

That has still yet to happen...

In the mean time, the master is playing videogames back in the mountains... (just joking heh heh)

(I dunno, I'm just blurting whatever comes out of my head...)

You know the drill, pick what you like and ditch what you don't like.

ROCK ON!!
