You can always improve .jpg by just throwing more pixels at it. If you upped the resolution to 600 dpi and used some mid-high quality setting, you'd still get a smaller file then 300 dpi raw, and it would look better on average then 300 dpi. (Which is totally excessive for reading on screen anyway.)
