Characters always fall into stereotypes and archetypes anyway. What makes them unique is what you do with them, their personality and how they communicate. Essentially there are only a certain number of stories out there (and i believe it can be argued there are only seven true stories) and anything else is what you put inbetween the main plot and roles. Good stories tend to have messages or at least make a comment on life, normally contemporary. We use stories as tools to educate as well as entertain, and there normally needs to be some sort of balance.
Or else you just dick around for fun. That works for me too.
