Might try checking in the System error logs for any bad sectors being located by Windows XP. Be aware that it's not necessarily going to label the drives correctly. I encountered those claiming that "D" was bad, when it was in fact the "F" drive that crapped out.

Alternatively, try SpeedFan. It monitors fan speeds and computer temperatures, but it also lets you view the SMART statistics logged by pretty much any hard drive from the last ten years. You'll find a failing drive real fast that way.
