Now that I go back to the first page, I think it's clear now that he is a miniature clone. (The panels are set up to present the reader with a mystery: it isn't obvious what's going on -- even if you do read Japanese (or Chinese in this publication) -- until further along in the story.)
You see the flask on the table, which then breaks (his "birth": he's now large and developed enough), and then he's running off. I think he doesn't know early on that that's what he is.
