If you read the walls in the safe houses, it explains bits of what happened.
The virus isn't airborne for one. All the Infected do is beat the snot out of Immunes, they don't bite. Though I would assume the virus was spread by bodily fluids.

If anything, they're "Rage Zombies" with mutated body parts. And on some occasions, the Infected actually beat the fuck out of eachother...Which is funny. Honestly, I wouldn't consider the Infected from Left 4 Dead as undead as much as I would think they're insane mutants.
