This is Jojo's, after all. Stuff doesn't have to make sense; just believe whatever the characters say, and if you're not dead, you can repair yourself completely.
Or is that what they want you to think?
Reading Pucci's monologue though, it is confusing. HW10-15 is the page I'm going off of for my argument, where he mentions the effect affects people physically as well.
