It was actually explained to me at one point that the subscription model is targeted toward the lazy user. They subscribe, forget to unsubscribe, and they're still paying a monthly fee years later when the site has stopped updating.
I agree that a la carte pricing would be a better model, and more profitable. It would also prevent the exact users I just mentioned. But subscriptions lead to a consistent income, while a la carte requires consistent updates to make consistent income.
