As others mentioned, either use NoScript in Firefox.

Or if you're in Opera, Customize and go to Buttons, select Preferences, and add an "Enable Plug-Ins" check box where-ever you prefer. When the box is checked, Java and Flash will work. When it's not, they won't. I'd say that'll stop roughly 90% of browser exploits from functioning. You'll still get on-click pop-ups, but a quick Ctrl+W fixes those.

Most of all, don't use Internet Explorer. As in, "at all."
