That's true, and not all that surprising that you would have a harder time with ActionScript, particularly AS3. With GameMaker it's a lot easier and quicker to build a full game with, as it's a complete game engine you're working off of; technically all you have to do to build a simple game is script some logic and put up a few events, and the engine handles the rest. Whereas AS3 requires a bit more knowledge of game programming practices, such as collision as you pointed out, to build a solid game.
It's not really worth arguing over though, since it's all a matter of tastes; potatoe potato. There's nothing wrong with either choice, I just prefer AS3 since it allows a bit more freedom.
