Gyms have equipment you don't necessarily have at home. They're also great for when it's raining. There is a trend towards staring at one's self and those around you at gyms though. I just stand outside the windows of them eating donuts.
I go out for a 1 1/2 - 2 hour walk every day with the dogs, regardless the weather. It keeps my weight in check. I can't imagine anything more dull than walking on a tread mill. I don't care about the weather. For resistence, I use dog leashes around trees. I can do lots of basic excercises around the house or in the park without the use of equipment. I look and feel worlds better than I did in the past when I was a member of a gym lifting weight.
