Managed to recreate an image in the same style using some basic techniques with the freeze mask and distortion tools in photoshop (along with curves for the hair lightening), and I can see why the images have been shrink down so much.

Look at the larger image, and you'll see the distortion in the photo as each of the characteristics are changed, especially in the hair.
In the shrunken image they are nowhere near as visible.
Still, nice trick though
