A .mkv file is a Matroska Video File.
Essentially, it's like a .avi file, but it has support for multiple audio/subtitle tracks within the .mkv file container.
.avi isn't actually a video type. It's a
container type. It contains video comperessed with various codecs (eg. Xvid or Divx), as well as audio, generally compressed with the mpeg3 (mp3) codec.
