Honestly, I don't think the original trope is even all that well established. If I'm right here, the bit traced back to "Now I Am Robot", which - as near as I can tell - was a line uttered by Bono in a blog posting about an alt-indie-electronica group called "I Am Robot and Proud". Always fun to try to trace these things back, but I imagine there's more to it than that.
