Actually more like 3-1/4 centuries
But 3 things
1)demographics " we the people" who's 'we'
different strokes for different aged folks
2) family tree the original painting has had 3-1/4 centuries for others to
do daughter works. The book is a daughter work.Sister Wendys books
are daughter works,as are Sister Wendy TV shows, mugs,t shirts, etc
3)multiplier effect-the 'daughter" ( Vermeers Hat needs paper,ink,printing presses,research,human resources,financing,a librarian,taxes, to make it to the public library shelf.All those resources need $$$,create jobs,etc.Take
3-1/4 centuries for the brand 'Vermeer' to sink into the publics mind and you've got a powerful economic entity
So no,Vermeers not dead.
a better question to muse over is
What if Vermeer had never existed?
