I'm reminded of this one comic i own called "Common Grounds" about a coffee shop chain where heroes and villains have a truce. The founder created it after his son was killed due to a miscommunication, and he still holds out hope years and years (after the man who killed him has served his prison sentence and been reduced to a bum on the street) later that his son can come back.
Unfortunately the tone of the story is that his son has one or both of the only types of American comic book deaths that are irreversible: 1) Death by Origin story (origin of Common Grounds), and 2) C-List fodder (his son was a bright eyed rookie)
