It was more an idle curiosity. I recall Jean Grey being tricked by a guy (the White Bishop?) with illusory powers into joining and I think her rank was Black or Red Queen?

And this was another thing that inspired obsessive repeat viewing. I recall being confused as all hell why I - a kid that grew up on supporting the standard good guys (your Hulk Hogans, your Ahnuld's, your Ninja Turtles) - wanted the Devil /"Darkness" to win, and the girl to stay evil and kill the unicorn.
