The item was cursed to do both, but with Celia's protective wards in pace she was able to blunt the curse's influence slightly. The problem was that she wasn't skilled enough with magic to protect herself from both at once, if it had been someone like Jillian she would have been adept enough at redirecting and controlling magic she would have been able to maintain both her body and her spirit. Unfortunately, she got turned into a gelatinous sphere, so Celia, much more of an arcane rookie, had to take her best shot at it. ^^;
