Question out of curiosity, are you sure the drive is dead and not the enclosure? I work in IT and I've had a number of external hard drive "failures" that turned out to be bad hardware on the enclosure itself. If you crack the enclosure open, you can usually extract the drive and put it in another enclosure or connect it to a SATA (or EIDE depending on the age of the enclosure) to USB adapter and extract your files that way. 9 times out of 10 (and this is mostly the case for Maxtor, Western Digital, and Seagate) the enclosure will fail LONG before the drive itself does.

Then of course, you always have Seagate's data recovery service, but then you have to decide whether or not your data is worth $1000+ to you.
