Faith is actually a bad example, she wasn't brainwashed or mind controlled, she had here own dark urges encouraged and made the choice to be bad. The Mayor didn't brainwash her, he simply helped her to embrace her dark side.

Brainwashing implies forcibly altering someones way of thinking, in reality intense physical and/or psychological torture is used to brainwash people. To brainwash someone you have to mentally tear them down in some way.

Charlie Manson is a real life brainwasher, he physically and sexually dominated his followers as well as fed them with psycho active drugs to demolish there mental defenses. They did not chose to become murders, they became murders because Manson decided they would be.
