I'm pretty skeptical of the Steam Workshop not because of the social aspect (which I'm fine with) but because I'm uncomfortable handing the reins for this sort of thing to Valve or even Bethesda for that matter. They're saying it's "optional" now but that kind of thing is just bureaucratic reassurance for measures that will be "mandatory" later.

Case in point, when Nexus got rid of the downvotes, turning the site into the gooey "hugbox" it is today. These kind of measures are implemented as "optional" features.
