I was wondering if that was official or not given I've seen some convincing evil shops of Street Fighter IV, but what I found on /u/ explains it, and opens up such a delicious path for yuri corruption~
Major spoilers from /u/ follow
"Story goes, at the end of SC3 Tira kidnaps Pyrrha(Sophitia's daughter) and gives her a fragment of Soul Edge(the "evil" sword) to corrupt her. In SCIV Sophitia is fighting to protect Soul Edge instead of destroy it like she was in the previous games because Tira has Pyrrha and told Sophie that if the sword is destroyed Pyrrha will die because she is now linked to it. Going off the story of 5, Sophie never found Pyrrha before she was killed. With the 2 swords becoming active again now, Patroklos takes it upon himself to destroy Soul Edge and find his sister."
EDIT"For whatever reason, the Japanese Soul Chain released on the Broken Destiny blog retconed that slightly. Tira is still the one who kidnapped Pyrrha, but the one who told Sophitia about Pyrrha's life being linked with Soul Edge, the one who manipulated her into serving Nightmare was stated to be Azola (the CAS who accompanies Sophitia in her first story stage).
And about Sophie's death, the light novel seems like it'll shed light on that. She's definitely dead (corpse and everything) but what's surprising is that Tira is there when she dies and it looks like Sophitia tells her to protect Pyrrha. Tira is also strangely taking Sophie's death hard.
I want context so bad..."
Spoilers end.
EDIT~ Hmm, that novel retcon is interesting, it might not hurt the corruption, but, hmmmm...
