Lauren Faust, the show's developer, was pitching he project "Milkyway and the Galaxy Girls" to Hasbro when one of there execs showed her a current(at the time) MLP project suggested Laren's drawing style would suit ponies. She took the job for the next pony project and decided to create the MLP show she always wanted as a kid. Friendship is Magic is awesome because of this fact, because it was developed by a nerd girl who made the show she wanted to see.
