There was a period from, say, the late 70's to late 80's where fantasy in comics, cartoons, and movies was prolific and unabashedly weird. Things started getting more "serious", ironic and cynical after that.
And yeah, Cthulhu was pretty big in the 80's. I think the deluge of material from new fiction writers since then has kind of diminished the big guy's presence. We seem to be in a third or fourth generation of modern fiction where the older sources of inspiration are somewhat diluted.
