Yeah, "missed opportunites" seems to be the motto of this movie. So many plotlines could've been explored - Victoria, for example, who shows every sign of being the protagonist until Barnabas shows up. But I suppose it's staying true to the TV series - once Barnabas appears, it's all about him.
