I think, for the longest time, that I confused auto-erotic asphyxiation with auto-erotic manipulation, and... the rest is history.
Dumbass mistakes to the rescue!

I'd just like to note that it isn't the artist that was caught jacking off at work, as you'd seemed to imply in the original post. He didn't and was smart enough not to. He was not smart enough to think one of his watcher would do what he would do.
It was a
random watcher, with no relationship to the artist whatsoever, who police found dead in that watcher's own apartment or basement.... as said art watcher killed himself in auto-erotic asphyxiation. And sadly for the artist, who had no knowledge of these events until later, it was his(apparently hardcore M/M porn) that was on the watcher's screen.
Then I think it must have made the news or something because this event led the artist' bosses to get knowledge of him doing porn at all, which resulted in being insta-fired.
Sorry folks, sometimes life happens even without an artists' wishes. Sometimes, his -fans- can be his downfall, literally.
I'm not saying anything like that happened to Ranzab, or Nolaf... but seriously, as it happened before.... when you get a job, especially something that look serious.
Well, you try to hide what traces remains of any "unwholesome works" you might have done in the past, or try to disconnect yourself from any of it in fear of anyone making the link between you and it, be them work, family, or anyone else you might care about but would prefer not to know about such things.
Heck, maybe he's just moved on from that style or themes and didn't even want to be reminded of this kind of works. Granted, it's a pity he didn't refund or such, but I can think of many reasons some people would rather not finish a work or forget about some of the art they've done before.
A "normal" person might freak out at "horribly deformed body monster porn with all that nudity and freaky twisting body" most certainly just in this sequence's case... and if there's any such normal persons amongst those people he care.
It can be only one thing, or a combination of others.... but I can think of many reasons an artists might wish to "cut ties" with a community they were part of, from starting a new job or relationship, being once passionate for a particular type of work but now finding themselves increasingly disinterested... people they cared for finding about those works leading to a crisis of choosing between those people or those works.
Or, heck, maybe just a broken computer and not having the funds to repair it immediatly... and then having forgotten about those works in the first place once they finally can go around to resuming.
Just saying, there's so many reasons one might have dropped the face of the earth without warning, and though many have a questioniable validity in the eyes of the public, many still probably retain a certain amount of validity in the concerned artists' eyes as the one actually in said situation forcing or influencing them to "disapear".
And that's not mentionning the possibility of injury/other such things mentionned earlier by someone else.
Anyway, my pardons but I at least wanted to get out the viewpoint of someone who's been an artist and had to deal on his own end with such stuff as close family members caught with cancer, shit erupting in the family because of such and general downfalls that followed me even years after.
For just one thing amongst others I could mention without going into detail about my private life, which like for many others is an important thing for me.
Edit: Also, on the porn-not-porn subject, recall that one artist's "not the worst porny stuff they have ever done" can still remain another normal man's(or woman) "nightmare fuel", just for the reminder. I can think of many people I know for whom even such a "tame" sequence would still go straight into "nightmare fuel" category.
