I really feel like it depends on the animal. A rabbit should probably be pleasant or at least neutral, while animals like tigers and wolves should definitely involve some pain and terror.

There was also a discussion on the TMC forum about "Were" animals and what that implies. I kinda have to agree that any kind of Were-animal should probably have more painful, unwilling, and unpleasant connotations. With that said, those are my favorite kind of transformations and I like seeing any kind of Were-animal.
