Probably in this case, PNG is best for viewing in an official sort of fashion (if these were used in a game or whatever) as they look the most crisp and quality, but jpg would have worked for display. PNG takes up more space than jpg when there are many colors and gradients involved. However if the artist used sharp edges, the resulting image would have been smaller than a jpg and would load faster.
And I am now rambling about image formats.
