This is Hasbro's attempt to compete with Monster High (it pretty much admited), several people have suggested Twilight's dog isn't a parallel Spike but is Spike the Dragon. Twilight encounters human parallels to her friends and human versions of background ponies will abound. Thankfully this little adventure will not supplant Friendship is magic, season 4 will arrive in the fall High School free.
My opinion is that for what it is Equestria Girls will be good, how ever I don't like the Tween/High School Comedy genera as a whole. I mean the plot of this film has Twilight having to win Prom Queen to get her own Crown back after someone steals it. Not using her brain, not defeating some villain, but winning a popularity contest!
