You could try taking the hard drive out of the ancient derelict computer and hooking it up to the spare drive connectors inside a working computer, or if you're willing to spend a little money you can hook it up with an internal or external hard drive bay/cradle.
You can usually recover the data from your salvaged drive that way, sometimes even if the drive itself is suffering software or hardware problems that make it useless for running a computer. Hard drives don't always need to be 100% operational when they're used as slave/data drives.
