I am sorry to ask this but...How do you not know what your security is??!! Avast is a free install so who ever did your computer put it on there.
Removing antivirus can be a problem if you do not know what you are doing and most anti-virus programs would probably give you the same problem
Here are the steps I said open avast and follow the click numbers and make sure the boxes are properly set. Sorry about the writing I did this with my mouse.

yea only thought it had norton not avast and also because its a new computer with windows 8 I'm having my own problem of trying to find avast on my computer
or I may just have norton, swore I heard it say avast update, so for norton how would I get around that seeing as a trial version thats gonna expire in a couple months and I got a copy of trend micro that I can install
so Metatron just shoot me a PM as to how to solve this to not clog up this thread
