Yeah, that's why I like the webcomic Dragon Ball Multiverse. The guys who started it based it on GT NEVER HAPPENING but still managed to rope in several of the side-movies DBZ spawned and have done a pretty decent job at keeping the whole thing true to Toriyama's style and storylines that the alternate universes all spawned from (my favorite is the universe where Goku never got amnesia as a baby from hitting his head, and thus remained a ruthless Saiyen that wiped out humanity until Raditz picked him up 20yrs later).
They even showed their comic to Toriyama and he apparently wasn't disappointed by its plot or anything. Though at one point he pointed to a picture of Vegito and asked who it was, to which the artist and writer gawked and asked how Toriyama could forget about his own character. Toriyama's response was basically "Give me a break, that was over 15 years ago..."
