With that in mind.. If I heard enough of clothes stretching/rippage sound effects in the trailer(s), I think I'd prefer audio productions patterned after Sims' character Cassie simply because of the fact that she wasn't all freakish with her reactions. My single choice of a scene I would buy if the trailer convinced me well enough would be a rendition of the classroom growth scene. Here is an excerpt from the original script page of this scene:
JETT:
Cass, your skirt.
Cassie looks down. Her conservative skirt is now a tight mini. She cringes in pain once more and her skirt rips, showing off her thigh. Cassie looks at herself in disbelief.
JETT:
Are you growing?
...
The professor never finishes his sentence. As he's talking, another growth spurt hits Cassie. A button pops off of her top.
...
She grows another few inches, doubles over in pain, and covers herself. Her top and skirt are thoroughly ripped now, showing plenty of flesh.
My point? Plain and simple I would've preferred if Cassie had grown much more than even the script implies, let alone the film itself and how it cut corners. Maybe she grows to half the size she was after the scene with that jock and spider, which would be much larger than how the first spurt ended up being from the classroom. This would allow much clothes bursting, awkwardness, in the classroom itself. Small, brief bursts of increase in size, apprehension, anxiety, leading up to panic by Cassie herself. But not wearing a skirt, to clarify that I was satisfied with what Cass was wearing in the film for the classroom scene (shorts, button up shirt, underwear, shoes).
By doing brief, short spurts of growth say maybe an inch or two at a time, you could really make use of the stretching sounds her various articles of clothing should have made. This would create anxiety that not only should Cassie have been increasingly alarmed by her unexpected growth, but the increasing straining of her clothes and gradual rise in height makes things worse that her classmates would notice the predicament too. Once you begin with the stretching and straining sounds pre-clothes bursting, the pace could still be fairly steady, quick, and not so long that it goes outside of the length/cost you have in mind.
Shoes groaning ominously as her feet strain her shoes, jean shorts stretching as they
squeeze with increasing discomfort on her thighs, (unseen) underwear shrinking creating arousing but awkward discomfort such as the urge to pull her panties out of her crotch through the then tighter shorts and her bra straps tightening under her button-up shirt creating the urge to pinch at them through the top itself, her boobs and torso swelling up to slowly put increasing pressure on the buttons and her bra underneath, upper arms swelling and stretching the shrinking sleeves of the shirt, increased gasping and heavier breathing from the effect of clothes shrinking and realization that whatever is happening to her it obviously isn't going to stop, expressions of slight pain as her clothes overall are so tight that the discomfort and anxiety are reaching a peak -- just as her jean shorts button bursts off with authority. Now for the clothes bursting to heighten the tension.
Louder stretching and groaning outfit sounds, followed by another intrusive pop from one of her shirt buttons, snapping of her shoe laces and bursting shoe material, an unexpected uneasy pause for a few moments to really torque Cassie's anxiety as she breaths heavily from the ordeal and whispers begging that it be over. Only to hear a deep stretching sound followed by maybe a belt buckle busting (even though she isn't wearing one in the film) over top of the already burst jean shorts button, tearing along the thighs of the shorts, the remaining shirt buttons bursting off one by one along with shirt tearing in whichever places, and now perhaps including groaning sounds of her classroom seat from her increased weight and squeezing of her ass and thighs into the sides and back of the seat.
Yeah, a fairly more sound effect intensive concept with much more apprehension than anything the film depicts. Make us go psycho from the higher tension in this sort of approach. Make our.... eye.. balls... pop out. ;-)
If you've ever seen the ending of The Incredible Shrinking Woman, note the sound of Tomlin's shoes groaning before she looks down at them. Perhaps this sort of moment would be best for what to reveal in the trailer. The moment before all hell bursts forth.
...so yeah. Kinda skip the implied science lab scene. If by my idea, Cassie would already be
big enough, freaked out, and noticed by everyone too. She'd even bump her head on the classroom doorway as she made her hasty exit onto the busy campus. ^_^
