Who's blowing smoke up his ass? Just about everyone has acknowledged both his successes, and where he needs work, haven't they?
He's contributing something most will never attempt, and if they do, they'll fail horribly at it (see 85% of C4S). He needs to polish it, definitely, but there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that what he's doing is time-consuming and potentially expensive. Nor is giving him a pat on the back setting him up for failure, at least not in my eyes.
