I think the issue then was the audience of SW at them time, focused by repressed men who wanted power and control over someone weakened.
You can actually see this very well in some of the biggest names and works done, such as Minimizer. (I am not saying he was repressed, I am saying that a lot of art done by or for Minimizer had women being controlled, trapped, or most popularly, taped and stripped.)
Naturally the most vocal supporters of the S/A and torture porn tried to dominate the subculture but were eventually made less of a voice when newer writers and enthusiasts joined.
However, their damage to the community is still heavy as themes of willing participants or those who enjoy it are not nearly as common and shrinking is seen as a frightening experience where people are fighting for survival.
Some of the focus has also shifted from writings about being the one causing the woman to shrink to new writings about the woman's pov on shrinking.
