This story is getting super super interesting, even more so than the defaulted 3-D printer scandal.

The messed up thing is I believe that the project imploded and no one (especially the guy who took the money) suffered any consequences.
I really doubt that Cuddle ran off with all the cash. I think the project was a huge success and he had no concept on how to implement such a project and burned through the cash due to poor decisions.
(Who knows maybe he did hire a staff to do X, Y, Z and the individuals took the money and left)
BUT
Is a creator legally obligated to fulfill the promises of their project?
Yes. Kickstarter's Terms of Use require creators to fulfill all rewards of their project or refund any backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill. (This is what creators see before they launch.) We crafted these terms to create a legal requirement for creators to follow through on their projects, and to give backers a recourse if they don't. We hope that backers will consider using this provision only in cases where they feel that a creator has not made a good faith effort to complete the project and fulfill.
Either way this is an amazing story, and I am curious to learn more.
AND I cannot fathom the possibility that Kickstarter lacks any information (Real Name, DOB, ID info, address, Bank accounts) involving the identity of Mr. Cuddles.
This is a perfect example for Kickstarter to step up. If Cuddles is MIA have Kickstarter update the project page with a Legal Action Tab where people can get in contact with the legal team investigating said project.
Ah man, this is messed up, best off luck to all of those who seeming got taken. I hope you all gain restitution.
