Having a credit card or debit card is partly a risk of debt, but it's also a useful tool. If you suddenly need a lot of money (i.e. rentals when car breaks down), you have access to it and can pay it back.
But I agree, I hate the idea of the credit card debt. Which is why my only card has a limit of a grand even after they offered to raise it.
