You are right. Our depiction of modern sirens come from other different creatures from the Greek mythology, the undines and the nereids. The vase concretely shows one very popular story, when Odysseus (the roman Ulysses) wanted to listen to the songs of the sirens, so he had himself tied in the mast of the boat, instead of plugging his ears with wax, like the rest of the crew
