The only down-side to a Kryptonite approach is that, like that fictitious rare mineral, any one thing that is the trigger, unless very common, would be rather easy to avoid.
That is why common triggers such as water, alcohol, chocolate, milk, etc. fit in to
building up a believable story scenario. Make the trigger too rare and just having the thing around stretches credulity. Like every time Superman amazingly ran into his green, or red, or yellow Achilles heel.
Say she reacts to Nickle. Well, you can just avoid it... just like any metal allergy.
Well, you could just invent a mineral, say... like...
Boobonium which just happens to be the combination of very common items.
