I hear what you're saying tho, IMO it's one thing to read a scary/frightening story to a child and something completely else to show them it, visually, in a movie. Especially when color cinema and quality animation were very new things in the 40s and 50s.
In the 80s Disney did try to go a bit darker with The Black Cauldron and they got slapped down HARD by parents of traumatized children. So I can agree with Disney changing a lot of our classic fairy tales.
If you want darker/grittier, do it by candlelight and a childs imagination.
