This was partly "inspired" by Marvelous Melmo (aka ふしぎなメルモ, Fushigi na Merumo) , an early anime series with AR/AP, by the same guy (Osamu Tazuka, aka The God of Manga), who created Astro Boy and Kimba the while Lion ("inspration" for Disney's Lion King).

Episode #23: Marvelous Morpheus
In an unexpected encounter, Melmo's and Morpheus' bottles of red-and-blue pills are accidentally swapped. Hilarity ensues... Thank you for the link, BTW: I'm familiar with this story of Tezuka's, but I've never seen the anime.
