The story veered off into a strange direction that goes beyond my tastes, but I'll happily defend the people who liked this.

Think of it this way: some people enjoy gory horror movies. Does that make them habitual sadists? Does that mean that they necessarily want to see gory scenes play out in real life? How is it any different if you toss a sexual fetish into the mix?

You don't know much about sadistic mutilators then. My point is, that this kind of fetishization of dehumanizing sadism is not healthy by any stretch of the imagination. These kinds of mentalities are the source of all sorts of problems. Whether or not they can actually be performed in the real world is of no consequence, the psychological building blocks behind it that cause him to be interested in that kind of material is the problem.
